On 1 January 2012 the new Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS) commenced in NSW.

Although the aim of the Model WHS legislation was to create a uniform approach to health and safety across Australia, there are a number of states that are yet to bring the new law into force, namely, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The remaining states and territories have enacted new WHS laws albeit in some respects on different terms.
