Alan Switzer, a director in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, says:

"As we rapidly approach the end of another fantastic British jump racing season, all eyes turn to Aintree for The Grand National, which once again will be one of the highest attended events on the UK sporting calendar. Upwards of 150,000 people will flock to Liverpool this Saturday, part of the 700,000 in the North West, and 5.8 million nationally, who go racing every year. Up to 10 million people are expected to tune in on what is the busiest day of the year for the betting industry. Punters up and down the country are expected to spend around £100 million as they have a flutter on the race.

"After the weekend, British Racing will turn its attention to the flat season which promises to deliver some fascinating contests including the return of potential superstar, Frankel, in the new QIPCO British Champions Series. Created to better showcase Racing's key flat races, the Series is an exciting new development which is intended to broaden the appeal of the sport and will culminate in a new flat season finale at Ascot in October."
