Beth A. Williams, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy at the DOJ, outlined several federal initiatives to combat elder fraud and abuse.

In her statement at the American Bar Association's National Aging and Law Conference, Ms. Williams described several priorities to prevent financial exploitation of elderly Americans, including:

  • the Elder Fraud Sweeps, which identifies and takes action against criminals who defraud American seniors;
  • the Transnational Elder Fraud Strike Force, which is an interagency enforcement effort to investigate and prosecute foreign-based fraud schemes targeted at American seniors;
  • the Elder Justice Coordinators, who are stationed at every U.S. Attorney's Office to provide resources for crime victims; and
  • the Victims of Crime Act, which provided compensation and assistance to over 250,000 elder abuse victims in 2017 alone.
