On June 19, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a proposed rule to update e-prescribing standards under Medicare Part D by adopting standards that ensure secure transmissions and expedite prior authorizations. The proposed rule would implement new prior authorization transaction standards for the Part D e-Prescribing program as required by the Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act. Under the proposed change, prescribers would be able to complete prior authorizations online through their EMR or e-prescribing system at the time of the patient visit, before a prescription is transmitted to a pharmacy. This will streamline the process for prescribers and reduce waiting times for patients. The proposed standards would begin in January 2021.  Comments on the proposed rule are due to CMS by August 16, 2019.
