Somewhere in most workplaces, there is a familiar large white poster titled "Health and Safety Law." Most of us have seen it, but how many have ever read the small print? The perfect opportunity is at hand as employers have until 30 June 2000 to replace all existing "Health and Safety Law" posters and leaflets with revised versions issued on 1 October 1999.

These new versions give up-to-date general information to employees about their rights and their employer's duties, under Health and Safety legislation. The poster also sets out the essentials of health and safety management, including employers' duties to consult staff on health and safety matters.

"By law, the posters must be displayed in a prominent location in the workplace, or alternatively, employers must give each employee a copy of the leaflet. Failure to comply with this requirement could result in action by the Health and Safety Executive against the employer," said Angus MacLeod.

Posters and leaflets can be ordered from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury CO10 2WA, or on the HSE website at www.open.gov.uk/hse/hsehome.htm.
