With thanks to Dr David P Stewart, the Rapporteur for the Inter-American Juridical Committee we are able to report that in March his Report issued on behalf of the Organisation of American States has its purpose the establishment of a framework for safeguarding the rights of individuals in relation to their personal data.

Members of the Organisation of American States are left to decide how best to implement the principles set out in the report.

The data protection principles in the Report follow the OECD guidelines on Data Processing and the similar principles in the European Data Protection Framework.

The report runs to some 23 pages and a copy can be obtained on request.

The content of this article is intended to provide a general guide to the subject matter. Specialist advice should be sought about your specific circumstances.
