ICFLPP Conference, 3rd-5th July 2019
The International Centre for Family Law, Policy and Practice hosted a large international family law conference at the University of Westminster last week. The conference was organised by Dr Frances Burton and Professor Marilyn Freeman. Baroness Hale, President of the Supreme Court of the UK delivered the International Family Law Lecture, as a prelude to the conference.
The conference involved solicitors, barristers, judges and academics from many jurisdictions including Singapore, Japan, China, Australia, Canada, the US and many parts of Europe.
The International Centre for Family Law, Policy and Practice was established in October 2013 to bring together academic, practitioner and policy perspectives on all aspects of Family and Child Law. It aims to conduct and disseminate cross disciplinary and cross jurisdiction research in the broad area of that important field of English and Comparative Law, in which its Co-Directors have respectively worked for many years.
Alexandra Tribe from Expatriate Law lectured with Will Tyler QC on 'Sharia Principles -v- the Paramountcy of Welfare'. The talk addressed the English court's struggle to effect judicial comity in the context of the international movement of children to and from the United Arab Emirates.
Other talks covered international divorce, child abduction, maintenance obligations and other international family law issues.
An excellent selection of social events were organised for delegates including dinner at the House of Lords. The event was a great success and we look forward to the next conference in 2022.
