Welcome to the latest issue of Appleby's annual "In The Courts" publication, a round-up of the most interesting decisions handed down by the courts of our offshore jurisdictions in 2018. As always, we have organised the cases thematically rather than by jurisdiction, to show how similar and connected issues have been addressed by our different courts. The links to each of the five main subject areas below will take you to our round-up in that area.

Even on our usual selective basis, we have covered over 60 cases, reflecting how our courts remain busy with significant, interesting and often complex litigation. As well as decisions at first instance, including the decision in the largest case ever heard in Cayman (and reputedly the longest trial in any Commonwealth jurisdiction in 2017), they comprise a large number at appellate level and several Privy Council decisions, including a particularly interesting case on appeal from Mauritius that deals with when and how appeals to the Privy Council may be brought.

As always, the content has been compiled by members of our Dispute Resolution Group in Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Mauritius and our dedicated professional support lawyers. I am particularly grateful to Marit Hudson for help with compilation and editing and Jared Dann, James Dean, Kyle Mills, Jessica Harris, Lisa Upham, Andrew Willins, Sharmilla Bhima and Anthony Williams for content.

If you would like more information on any of the topics or decisions covered, please ask your usual Appleby contact, or email Marit Hudson who will forward your inquiry to the appropriate person.
