WeirFoulds LLP

Our Firm

WeirFoulds is recognized as a leader in the Canadian legal profession. We are proud of our heritage, and our reputation for excellence that has been built on a long history of establishing and protecting our client relationships. Since our doors opened in 1860, we have provided the legal services, advice and know-how that our clients require to be successful. Our consistent ranking as one of the top 10 regional firms in Ontario by Canadian Lawyer Magazine and our recognition as Ontario Law Firm of the Year at the 2020 Canadian Law Awards are each a testament to our commitment to exceptional service. We offer full access to our business acumen and insights in serving clients in four broad areas of practice: (1) Government; (2) Litigation; (3) Property; and (4) Corporate. Our size offers clients access to world-class legal services without the burden of extensive cost overheads. Our roster of top-tier legal talent is what allows us to operate in a streamlined and strategic manner. We offer our clients access to convenient, seamless and accessible services.

At WeirFoulds, we recognize that we need to advance and demonstrate equality, diversity and inclusion (“EDI”) in everything we do, internally and externally. To assist in that endeavour, we have mobilized an EDI Committee that comprises almost 30 of our staff, administration, associates and partners. That Committee, with the support of the Management Committee, has been working diligently on the key areas of focus that require attention, review and action at our firm. Our goal is to put words into concrete action through a number of specific steps. These are described in our official statement on our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, which we are pleased to share on our website at weirfoulds.com/diversity-inclusion.

Litigation

More than half of our lawyers are litigators, active on many fronts—including some of the largest and most visible complex legal disputes in Canada and abroad. We are known for our strength in managing complex litigation cases. Based on our broad litigation experience and depth of advocacy skills, clients bring their most challenging and pressing problems to WeirFoulds. Our litigators appear in significant cases that become reported and leading decisions with a frequency that is remarkable for a law firm of any size, and are consistently recognized for their expertise and accomplishments.

Corporate

The firm’s corporate practice has a strong tradition of serving business clients in a variety of areas, including mergers and acquisitions, banking and corporate finance, private equity, securities, multinational transactions, commercial real estate, leasing and development, public sector transactions, and tax, regulatory, and intellectual property matters. We provide comprehensive legal services to a wide range of clients—from established public companies and major institutions requiring sophisticated legal services, to entrepreneurs who are starting, or expanding, their business ventures.

Property

WeirFoulds has a property practice that is attuned to the needs of today’s leading corporations and organizations, and offers commercial real estate and property development expertise that is sought after by clients from all over Canada and abroad. We have acted on the largest and most significant property and infrastructure developments in Canada. These projects have ranged from shopping centres to public transportation projects, from waterfront re-development to hydro transmission corridors, from land fill sites to office towers, from highways to industrial projects, and virtually everything in between. Best Lawyers in Canada consistently rates WeirFoulds as one of the top firms in Real Estate Law in Toronto and Ontario. Our expertise covers all aspects of property development, including land development, commercial real estate, leasing, construction, infrastructure and financing. We are a consistently ranked firm by Novae Res Urbis as a Top 10 development firm in the Greater Toronto Area.

Government

Our government law practice clears the way for major public/private projects in Canada’s fastest-growing regions. We find solutions to disputes involving public bodies. We have worked on a significant number of cases at all levels of government, and have forged positive working relationships with officials in a vast array of governmental agencies, boards and commissions. We understand and are sensitive to the high expectations that the community places on the conduct of those who serve the public—both elected legislators and non-elected public servants. Meeting these challenges—whether in court, a legislative chamber, a contract negotiation, or some other context—requires a nuanced understanding of the intersection of politics, public law and private law.
